FRCC is for the Birds!

Posted by LindaB on Tuesday, August 26, 2008

We have new additions to the bird-friendly habitat being installed in the Beech Tree’s Garden, north of the farmhouse at Luscher Farm. Our long-time volunteer Margie Adams is a professional potter (now semi-retired), and she has created these wonderful sky blue bowls to fit into the five plant surrounds we use for holding up herbaceous and short growing clematis, such as ‘Andante’ (Integrifolia Group) and ‘Kirigamine’ (Japanese large-flowered hybrid, which blooms at about a meter in height).

The bowls are shallow, and sized to fit into the outer ring of the plant surrounds so that the ring acts as a perch. At Margie’s suggestion we will also be putting one or two nice rocks in each bowl, to make it easier for birds to see the water level. The plant surrounds were purchased from Oh! Grow-up, purveyors of functional garden art in Battleground, WA.

Now this part of the garden offers birds more of what they need in a garden: cover, food, and water. We have planted many types of plants to lure the broadest range of birds to the area, including Mountain Ash, Snowberry, species Roses, and Beautyberry (Sorbus, Symphoricarpos, Rosa glauca, and Callicarpa respectively) for winter berries; hardy Fuchsia, Penstemon, Salvia, and native Ribes (currant) for Hummingbirds; Echinacea for seed-eaters. As we develop more of this garden (thanks to funds granted by the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon), we will be adding many more native (and “improved native”) plants to provide a year-round menu. HPSO has also granted money for a birds-seen-at-Luscher-Farm flyer which will be available at our kiosk on the north side of the Beech Tree’s Garden.

This garden is already listed on the National Wildlife Federation’s roster of Backyard Bird Habitats. It is open to the public for self-guided walks from dawn to dusk daily, and this space is available for picnic rental through Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation.

Thank you Margie!

Clematis Celebration – Joy Creek Nursery
Late Summer and Repeat Blooming Clematis – Linda Beutler speaker
Part two of our Celebration of Clematis. We have never been able to do justice to the fall-blooming clematis during our annual, late spring, two-day event. This year, in coordination with the Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection, we divide our Clematis Celebration into two parts, one in the spring and one in the fall, in order to showcase plants that have been overlooked. Join us for and in-depth look at plants of the Tangutica Group (which includes C. orientalis and C. tangutica) and many of the large-flowering clematis that repeat bloom in the autumn. (Linda will be speaking at 1:00 PM)

Linda Beutler published her first book in 2004, Gardening with Clematis. She has been elected Vice President of the International Clematis Society this summer. She is currently an instructor at Clackamas Community College, Oregon, and curator of the Brewster Rogerson Clematis Collection. Her second book, Garden to Vase, was published spring 2007.

Don’t miss this year’s clematis seed gathering and starting workshop at the Rogerson Clematis Collection. We will meet at our greenhouse at Luscher Farm (135 S. Rosemont Rd. West Linn, OR 97068) on Sunday, November 9 , at 1:00 pm (we’ll end at 3:00 pm). Everything you need (pots, seed-starting mix, labels, fine gravel) will be provided, at a cost of $10.00 per person (this event is free for patrons). As an added incentive, you will each get to take home a seedling started from last year’s workshop!

If you have seed from clematis species (NOT hybrids) that you would like to bring and share, or just to learn how to clean and start it for yourself, feel free to bring it.

This class is facilitated by FRCC President and green thumb in residence Sally Geist, and FRCC curator Linda Beutler. Space is limited, so please RSVP to Linda Beutler at clematis@ipns.com or 503-238-8571.

Meet Pam!

Posted by LindaB on Sunday, August 17, 2008

Introducing our summer intern, Clackamas Community College horticulture student Pamela Anderson. We have her for 90 hours this summer term. Pam’s particular interest is vine propagation, and she has learned to take semi-hardwood cuttings, tip cuttings (for the integrifolia group), crown division, and we are just starting to harvest and plant this year’s crop of seed. With Pam’s continued help during the Fall term, we hope to be able to harvest and share much more species seed than has been possible before, to be shared with the International Clematis Society and the North American Rock Garden Society. You see her here, dividing an ancient potted clematis.

Our Pam

Pam’s work this term earns her 3 college CWE (career work experience) credits, and she has already committed to join us for the rest of 2008. Pam does not limit herself to propagation, and pitches in to weed and mulch and water and generally do whatever needs doing. Her personal goal is to have her own vine nursery someday. If we could clone her, we would!

Mid-August Bloom Report, 2008

Posted by LindaB on Sunday, August 17, 2008

In spite of extremely hot weather (in the 100s August 14 & 15, 90s since), the clematis in the ground continue to expand themselves. Development in the Beech Tree’s Garden continues, but some of the clematis planted just last autumn are blooming happily. On the front bank, the historic Texensis Group hybrids are draping down the bank, combining themselves willy-nilly with the agastache, salvias and penstemon planted there. The color combinations are driving the hummingbirds wild!
