Best November Blooms Ever!

Posted by LindaB on Saturday, November 15, 2008

Everyone who visits the collection is surprised by the number of lovely clematis still in bloom both in the greenhouse and the garden. Most of the cirrhosa group are in bloom or about to be, and the Clematis napaulensis are all leafing out, although how the two outdoor plants survive the winter remains to be seen. They were hard-prune before planting, and bloom is not expected this year.

Future Dates 2009

January 2009 Dormant

February 27 - 28 & March 1, 2009 — OAN Yard, Garden and Patio Show—FRCC always has an informational booth at this show, and often we have winter-flowering clematis for sale. Volunteers are needed, and are given free admission to the show. Contact Sally Geist at hjgeist@earthlink.net or 503-223-8017.

March 21, 2009 — Pruning Workshop, Saturday from 9 am to noon (with a break). Rain or shine, we tour the FRCC display gardens and “prune them what needs it!” We will also direct clematis into new shrubs and roses. If it is too nasty outside, we will work on plants inside the greenhouse. This will be a great time to preview clematis propagated at the collection for sale at the April HPSO sale (and yes, buy them!) To register contact FRCC curator Linda Beutler at 503-238-8571 or clematis@ipns.com.

April 11 - 12, 2009 — HPSO Spring Plant Sale (Expo Center) Volunteer coordinator for this sale to be determined.

May 2 - 3, 2009 — Clackamas County Master Gardeners “Spring Garden Fair” at the Canby, OR fairgrounds. Volunteer coordinator for this sale to be determined.

May 23, 2009 — Inviting Vines Tour II, FRCC benefit garden tour. (Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend) This year we will feature gardens in Lake Oswego, the collection gardens at the farm can be toured, and the collection will have plants for sale. Volunteer coordinator for this sale to be determined.

July 11, 2009, Saturday, 9 am to noon — Summer Pruning Workshop and Early Bastille Day Celebration. Curator Linda Beutler likes to prune and deadhead the clematis in mid-summer in anticipation of abundant fall rebloom. Bastille Day (July 14th) is a good time to do it although we’ll be a little early. Join her for a festive morning around the farm pruning, deadheading, planting, and perhaps consuming beverages effervescent in nature. The Front Bank garden should be splendid! Or just drop by to cast your vote on the mature clematis seedlings being
evaluated in the test plot popularity poll. Call Linda at 503-238-8571 or e-mail clematis@ipns.com to RSVP.

July 26, 2009, Sunday from 1pm to 3-ish — Summer Propagation workshop. Thanks to 2008’s propagation intern we now know some things about clematis propagation we didn’t know before, one being timing. Cuttings taken in July and early August are the most successful, whether they’re large-flowered hybrids, montanas, atragenes (”alps” and “macs”) and many
others. Come hear what we’re doing differently. Space is limited, the cost is $10.00 per person (payable when you arrive), all materials provided (for patrons this is a free class). Register with Linda Beutler at 502-238-8571 or via e-mail at clematis@ipns.com.

More events (Clematis Celebration, volunteer appreciation evening, to name a few) and details of the above will be posted so stay tuned, watch those e-mails and visit our web site often. I am also always happy to have members contact me about any event.

Volunteers, thank you. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.
